MySpider ZT lets golfers customize colors, shafts, alignment aids and engraving on TaylorMade’s Spider ZT putters.
There’s something oddly revealing about the way golfers build custom putters.
Some players want everything murdered out in matte black, as if their putter should look like it belongs in a stealth bomber. Others want bright paint fills, colorful shafts and alignment lines that resemble airport runway markings. Some golfers want absolutely no alignment aid at all because they think too many lines clutter their brain. Others look at a clean topline the way most people look at an unsolved math equation.
Clearly, TaylorMade understands this, which is why the company is opening up its Spider ZT platform to full-scale customization through the new MySpider ZT program. It gives golfers the chance to essentially design their own version of the company’s zero-torque putter.
And yes, if you really want a maroon-and-olive-green Spider ZT with a rainbow graphite shaft and your initials engraved into the sole, apparently nobody at TaylorMade is going to stop you.
The interesting part is that TaylorMade isn’t changing the performance DNA of the Spider ZT. The company is keeping the engineering exactly the same while handing golfers control over almost everything they can see.
That’s good, because Spider ZT wasn’t designed to simply be another Spider. It debuted last year and aims to provide golfers with more face stability and consistency. TaylorMade’s approach blends zero-torque concepts into a shape and visual profile that still feels familiar to golfers who have spent years looking down at Spider mallets.
Now golfers can personalize that platform almost endlessly.
The MySpider ZT Standard model ($549.99) is available in lie angles of 68, 70, 72 and 74 degrees, while the heavier Counterbalance version ($599.99) comes in 70, 72 and 74-degree options. Both retain the onset hosel design and toe-up balance profile found in the stock Spider ZT models.
From there, the sky’s the limit.
Golfers can select different front finishes, back finishes, sole plate colors, paint fill combinations, face insert colors, sightline configurations and shaft colors. The Standard model offers steel and graphite shafts in finishes ranging from traditional black and silver to maroon, olive green and rainbow.
TaylorMade is also offering multiple alignment configurations that range from no sightline at all to single lines, triple lines, T-style configurations and something called “Pilot’s Eye,” which sounds less like a putting aid and more like a rejected Tom Cruise movie title.
The Counterbalance version receives its own customization treatment too, including sole plate colors, face insert colors and engraving options.
Players can also add up to six engraved characters to the sole because apparently some golfers now want their putters personalized like luxury luggage.
Honestly, this all makes perfect sense because putters occupy a strange place in golf equipment. Drivers are often evaluated scientifically. Irons tend to be judged by performance and consistency. But putters live in a much more emotional space. Golfers develop attachments to shapes, colors, sounds and alignment features that can border on irrational superstition. And if you’ve ever watched someone make more putts immediately after switching from one putter to another, you already know how personal all of this becomes.
That’s why programs like MySpider ZT exist. For TaylorMade, it creates another layer of engagement around one of the company’s flagship platforms. For golfers, it creates the opportunity to build something that feels less like an off-the-rack purchase and more like their own creation.
Of course, some golfers are going to use that freedom tastefully. Others are about to build putters that look like a bass boat wrapped in energy drink sponsorship decals.
