PGA Tour schedule upheaval claims its first tournament

The PGA Tour’s time in the motor city is coming to an end.

On Tuesday morning, the Rocket Classic announced that it would be ending its tenure as a PGA Tour stop, ending an eight-year run for the tournament in Detroit.

“After nearly 13 years as a PGA Tour title sponsor, including eight years in Detroit, 2026 will mark the final Rocket Classic,” tournament director Mark Hollis said in a statement reported by the Associated Press’ Doug Ferguson. “We are incredibly proud of what this tournament has meant to the city, from creating unforgettable moments for fans to raising more than $10 million for local organizations.”

The Rocket Classic — nee Rocket Mortgage Classic — will play one final time in late July before drifting off into a sponsor-less sunset, with tournament title sponsor Rocket Mortgage declining its option to host the event in 2027, per the Detroit News’ Tony Paul.

The decision follows years of weaker fields in the event, which had fallen out of favor with top stars returning from summer travels at the Open Championship and preparing for the final sprint of the PGA Tour season, the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

But perhaps more pressingly, the decision represents the first of what is expected to be a groundswell of changes for longtime PGA Tour events in 2027 and beyond. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp is expected to speak publicly in the coming weeks about the status of the Tour’s new “two track” schedule — a plan to reorient the Tour around a more coherent, easy to follow season-long competition stratified into two distinct buckets, one with larger purses and elevated events for the better players. It is expected that Rolapp’s next update will provide more clarity around the shape of each of those tracks, which could produce even bigger windfalls for the Tour around its biggest events, but could leave some smaller events, like the Rocket Classic, in limbo.

The status of golf’s calendar represents Rolapp’s biggest swing since being announced as PGA Tour CEO a year ago. The PGA Tour schedule has existed under its current general shape and dimensions for the better part of three decades, and to no small degree of financial success. At one point in the early LIV days, its predictably and repeatability were mentioned as strengths by players for both tours.

But critics have suggested that the Tour’s model, while profitable, comes at the expense of a greater (and even more profitable) sense of coherence and drama. Tour events take place twelve months out of the year, and many of the biggest moments on the Tour schedule come in the earliest months of the season, costing the Tour the kind of season-long narrative arc with a dramatic conclusion that fills the calendars (and bank accounts) most other professional sports leagues.

Under the first track of Rolapp’s “two track” vision, the Tour would coalesce the lion’s share of financial support around a smaller, more prominent series of tournaments. Supporters of this vision suggest it amounts to a relatively small shift in the overall pro golf calendar — the underlining of an already existing, if unspoken stratification between certain “big” PGA Tour events and other “local” ones.

Still, there is fair reason to be skeptical: The FedEx Cup Playoffs were initially intended to serve as a bridge to the same outcome of a unified, season-long Tour; they proved to be a ramp to tens of millions in sponsor-dollars and not much more. Rolapp’s vision not only aims to pursue these same ends — it also threatens to undercut the “local” events that have served as the bedrock of the tour for decades.

The Rocket Classic is the first of those events to be shown the door. But with change still lingering in the air at PGA Tour HQ as the heart of the golf season comes into focus, it may very well not be the last.

Eugenio Chacarra’s PGA Tour dreams come closer after ‘unique’ KLM win

Eugenio Chacarra called Sunday’s win at the DP World Tour’s KLM Open “very unique” because he triumphed in front of his father. But Sunday’s emotional win in Amsterdam was also different because of what the former LIV Golf member had to navigate on his final hole en route to victory.

Chacarra arrived at the 72nd hole holding a one-shot lead over Oliver Lindell, who played in the group ahead. As the tournament reached its climax, protestors ran onto the course and into the pond that surrounded the 18th green, setting off flares and chanting as the players made their way to the green. Lindell hit his approach shot into the par-5 as the chaos was unfolding.

Lindell’s approach came up a tad short of the green, but he was still able to get up-and-down for birdie to tie the lead and put the pressure on Chacarra.

But Chacarra answered the bell. He striped his tee shot and then sent his approach to the back of the putting surface, which gave him an easy two-putt for a closing birdie and his second DP World Tour win.

“Shot of my career, maybe,” Chacarra said of his shot into the 18th green. “That was a little tweener, but with adrenaline, I’m going to try to hit this one hard. It flew 10-15 [yards] longer than we thought. So, proud to see the ball land on the green and then took a nice first putt to give me a putt that you always dream of, a putt that you can’t really miss to win a tournament.”

DP World Tour staffers lined the green to make sure the protestors couldn’t run onto the putting surface as the tournament finished. The reason for the protests was not immediately clear. Two years ago at the KLM Open, protestors from Extinction Rebellion delayed tee times for several hours.

After knocking in his short, closing birdie putt, Chacarra let out a primal scream, and then the emotions started to flow.

“[I was thinking about] all the people that have been with me through my career,” Chacarra said after the win, which moved him inside the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

“It’s nice to win with my dad here. He’s given everything for me since I was little so it was something very unique and I think of him, for sure.”

With the win, Chacarra is projected to move to No. 6 in the season-long Race to Dubai standings. The top 10 players at the end of the year who are not already exempt on the PGA Tour will earn their cards for 2027.

Two weeks ago, Chacarra left a playoff at a U.S. Open qualifier in Dallas early before he had a chance to earn an alternate spot at Shinnecock Hills. Chacarra explained that he needed to catch a flight to get to Belgium to prepare for the DP World Tour’s Soudal Open. His main goal is to get to the PGA Tour and winning on the DP World Tour is the most direct route to that goal. He finished T22 that week and T12 the following week in Turkey.

On Sunday, the 26-year-old Chacarra battled tough scoring conditions and a protest-interrupted final hole to claim his second win on the European circuit and move closer to his dream of playing on the PGA Tour.

“This is a step a little closer to that,” Chacarra said after his win.

Once the No. 2-ranked amateur in the world, Chacarra joined LIV Golf in 2022. He spent three years on the rebel circuit before his contract was not renewed after the 2024 season. After leaving LIV, Chacarra noted that the Saudi-backed league was about “only money,” and that he wanted to chase his original golf dreams.

“I know this is what my heart tells me is right and it works for my motivation to wake up and grind and get better, and to say I can be a PGA Tour player one day,” Chacarra told Flushing It after leaving LIV. “So this decision is what’s best for me. I’m very thankful for what they’ve done, but my mind is different now and I want to get to what I was dreaming about when I was little. Because obviously LIV didn’t exist when I was growing up. I was watching Tiger Woods winning on the PGA Tour, and I want to do that.”

After coming out on top in Amsterdam, Eugenio Chacarra’s PGA Tour dreams are right in front of him. All that’s left is for him to finish the DP World Tour season strong and grab them.

An Honest Review of The Bushnell Tour V4 Rangefinder

Over the past few years, rangefinders have become all the rage amongst golfers.

The PGA of America even made rangefinders legal in all three of its major championships back in May of 2021. The move was made by the governing body with the hopes of speeding up the pace of play on the golf course at these events.

I’ve been playing golf for several years and I’ll be the first to admit that I was slow to come around to using a rangefinder during my rounds. However, when I purchased my last set of golf clubs, the salesman kindly threw in a Bushnell Tour V4 rangefinder as part of the deal. Now I don’t know how I ever played a round of golf without it!

Overall Rating and Thoughts: 4.9/5

Bushnell has converted me into a customer for life. While I used to think rangefinders were overpriced and unnecessary, I now don’t know how I ever played a round of golf without one! If you are on the fence about which rangefinder to buy, I highly recommend the Bushnell Tour V4 Slope Edition.

Overall, I’d give the Bushnell Tour V4 rangefinder 4.9 out of 5 stars for a variety of reasons. It’s insanely accurate and I love the Jolt Technology, which vibrates a little bit when you have locked on to the flag. This gives me peace of mind that I have aimed the laser in the correct spot.

The slope option is incredibly helpful because it factors in the degrees of slope for you, which tells you what the shot is actually playing. This makes a huge difference in the way of club selection. After all, most golf shots have some sort of slope involved.

If you are not a fan of the slope technology and just want the actual distance or you are playing in a tournament that doesn’t allow it, you can easily shift between modes by rotating the small notch dial on top. Again, Bushnell hits a home run with this feature.

I also love how the Bushnell Tour V4 rangefinder fits comfortably into the palm of my hand. It was designed with stabi-grip technology, which means it won’t slip out of your hand and it’s easy to handle. It’s also lightweight, so your arm and hand won’t get tired of holding it during a round.

Lastly, Bushnell is the most reputable rangefinder brand on the market. Tons of professional and amateur golfers around the world trust Bushnell to give them accurate yardage readings. If you’re in the market for a new rangefinder, you can’t go wrong with the Bushnell Tour V4 Slope Edition.

Quick Overview of the Bushnell Tour V4

Since the Tour V4 has so many key features, it’s hard to decide which ones I value the most. However, here are some of my favorite things about this particular Bushnell rangefinder. These are in no particular order.

Pinpoint Accuracy: Before using the Tour V4, I simply used a standard golf GPS app on my phone. While this worked okay to give me ballpark yardage on each of my shots, I quickly learned that the yardage it gave me was regularly three to five yards off the actual distance. I’ve never had this problem with the Tour V4 because its accuracy is always within 1-yard. It’s so refreshing to not have to second guess my club selection anymore!
Pin Seeker with Jolt Technology: This is probably my favorite feature of the Bushnell Tour V4 rangefinder! With other brands, you may be left wondering if you correctly aimed the laser at the target. This is NOT the case with the Tour V4 thanks to its Pin Seeker with Jolt feature. Simply aim at the flagstick and the device will provide you with a tactile confirmation by lightly vibrating a few times! How cool is that?
Fast Focus System: Some laser rangefinders or golf GPS apps can take quite a while to give you the desired yardage information. This can be due to a weak cell phone signal on a GPS app or a lengthy process on some off-brand rangefinders. Needless to say, it is super annoying when that happens! Thankfully, golfers don’t have to worry about that happening with the Bushnell Tour V4. It has a fast focus system that allows you to see your yardage number and degree of slope quickly and efficiently. No more waiting around to find your number and select your club.
2-Year Warranty: Let’s face it. Finding a company that stands behind its products with a solid warranty is almost a rare thing nowadays. This warranty means if you have any trouble with the Tour V4 in the way of manufacturing defects within two years of your purchase date, Bushnell will either fix the issue or send you a new rangefinder as a replacement.
Compact Size: Some golf rangefinders are too bulky, which makes it difficult to keep a steady hand when trying to find out yardages. You won’t have this problem with the Tour V4. It’s a lightweight device with an ergonomic design, which makes it much easier to hold than other brands. Your thumb will easily wrap around the entire device and you’ll be able to easily hit the red button on top to start shooting yardages.
Slope Mode: Being able to calculate the slope of each green is a remarkable advantage for amateur golfers. Thanks to the Tour V4’s ability to tell me the degrees of slope, I can decide the safest approach shot based on the hole layouts. This has helped me lower my handicap considerably.
Water Resistant: This one is a biggie for me because, unlike some other golfers, I like playing in the rain (I know, I’m weird). The Tour V4 is water-resistant so you can use it without fear of damaging it. However, just to be on the safe side, I wouldn’t use it in a complete downpour though, as it’s not waterproof (only water-resistant). Be sure to keep the rangefinder in its premium carrying case when you aren’t using it.
Access to Bushnell Golf App: Golfers of all levels will love the Bushnell Golf mobile app because of its helpful features. The app offers 3D flyovers of each hole as well as yardages to the front, to the flag, and to the back of the green. The app currently has a 4.8 rating on the App Store and a 3.9 rating on Google Play. Both of those impressive ratings just go to show that Bushnell spared no expense when it came to designing its mobile golf app.
Extremely Long Battery Life: Another critical feature of the Tour V4 is its battery life. I’ve been using this rangefinder for over a year and haven’t needed to replace the battery. It takes a 3-volt lithium cr2 battery, which is easy to find at most shopping outlets. The battery door also easily slides open to make the whole replacement process a breeze.

What I Dislike About The Bushnell Tour V4

There’s not a whole lot to dislike about the Tour V4. The only complaint I have is that it doesn’t come with a magnet on it, which would make it easier to mount it on the side of the golf cart during a round. This would be much more convenient than having to take it in and out of the carry case throughout the entire round on the course.

However, I have heard that the new Bushnell Tour V5 comes with its new BITE magnetic technology, which allows you to just slap it on the side of the golf cart rails. It would probably be pretty easy to just slap a small magnet on the side of the Tour V4 though.

The Deep Dive: Zero-torque putters have quickly gone from a niche curiosity to one of the hottest categories in golf equipment. Dare we say, they’ve gone mainstream. Tour Edge clearly believes the trend has enough staying power to justify an entire family of models rather than a single experiment.

The new Zero T lineup includes four models that are all built around the same central concept: positioning the shaft axis so it intersects the putter’s center of gravity (CG) location to reduce face rotation during the stroke and help enhance consistency.

That idea has become increasingly popular because many golfers struggle to consistently return the putter face square at impact. Traditional blade and mallet putters naturally rotate open and closed during the stroke, but zero-torque designs attempt to minimize that movement and create a more stable, repeatable motion.

While the technology story is similar across the lineup, Tour Edge differentiated the four models primarily through shape, alignment systems and moment of inertia (MOI) values.

The ZT-1 is a compact mallet with a short middle line on the topline and a pair of longer alignment lines that extend to the back of the head to guide your eyes toward the target line. The ZT-2 uses a more rounded mallet shape with a contrasting topline that makes the hitting area stand out. The ZT-3 has a squared-off frame intended to help golfers visually frame the ball easily and the ZT-4 is the largest, most stable model in the lineup. It has a rounded back section, golf-ball-size cutout and contrasting colors along with the highest MOI in the family.

The faces of the ZT putters vary slightly, with the ZT-1, ZT-2 and ZT-3 built from cast 304 stainless steel and featuring horizontally milled faces intended to promote consistent contact and roll. The ZT-4 moves in a softer-feeling direction with an aluminum body and a TPU insert.

Tour Edge is also making the series accessible from a pricing standpoint. At $199.99, the Zero T putters are significantly below many competing zero-torque models that now regularly sell in the $400 – $600 range.

All four models will be offered in 34-inch, 35-inch and 38-inch configurations. The standard-length versions come with oversized pistol grips, while the longer model uses a 16-inch extended grip designed to add stability and accommodate arm-lock-style setups.

With the ZT family, Tour Edge’s approach appears to focus less on reinventing the category and more on making the technology more approachable and far more affordable than many current alternatives.

PGA Tour veteran leads at Colonial, but now comes the hard part

No one had a better moving day at the Charles Schwab Challenge than Eric Cole. But now comes the hard part.

Cole, the 37-year-old PGA Tour veteran, shot a seven-under 63 on Saturday at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, to take a one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round. His 63 was two strokes better than the next-best round on Saturday (Nico Echavarria’s 65) and four better than a handful of others who shot 67.

This week is his 120th career start; he’s still looking for that elusive first victory.

“It’s not going to be an easy day tomorrow, I know that from my experience,” Cole said Saturday. “I know that it’s going to be difficult, but that’s why I practice really hard and that’s why I try and do everything the way I do so that I could be as prepared for whatever tomorrow brings.”

Cole started the day five off the lead but torched the classic country club well before the leaders teed off. He was four under on the front and added birdies on 10, 11 and 14 before his only bogey at 15. He bounced back with a birdie on 16 and parred the last two to take the clubhouse lead; a couple of hours later it was good for the 54-hole lead.

“Everything was kind of working well,” he said. “I got off to a really good start. I kind of knew going into it that it was going to be a harder course, firmer conditions. Getting off to that start and realizing how much harder the course was today was great. Then, yeah, just kept trying to hit good shots one after the next and make birdies when you can.”

Cole’s had runner-up and third-place finishes in his career (two of each) although all were in 2023. The closest he’s come to a victory was losing the 2023 Honda Classic in a playoff.

Cole sits at 12 under, one ahead of Ryan Gerard, who birdied the last two holes Saturday to shoot 68 and jump into solo second.

“That’s going to be big for tomorrow,” Gerard said of his finish. “Every shot really matters; any time you get a chance to capitalize on an opportunity you got to take advantage of it. And this course is going to play difficult, so you got to go out there with the right attitude and keep putting it in front of you and keep hitting it in the right spots.”

J.J. Spaun and Mac Meissner are tied at 10 under. Spaun, the 2025 U.S. Open champion, most recently won a month ago at the Valero Texas Open.

There’s also seven players tied at seven under, a group that includes Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland, Ludvig Aberg, Akshay Bhatia and Brian Harman.

“I think [Sunday] will play similar to today if there’s wind,” Cole said. “There’s no rain, so it’s not going to get any softer. So just be prepared for probably another difficult day that requires a lot of good quality shots.”

Patrick Rodgers is still here. He’s still going.

On the PGA Tour, over a dozen years as a pro, he’s winless, though, after a run in college where he won nearly everything. Folks have wondered. He’s wondered. Then late last year, Rodgers wrote a letter to himself — and it’s one of the best things you’ll read today, along with being the focus of a recently released (and wonderfully produced) video from the PGA Tour.

The letter’s penultimate paragraph?

I’m still here. I’m still going.

“I was one of the most accomplished college players of all time

“Yet 11 seasons and over 300 PGA Tour events later, I still have zero wins.

“That’s the story most people know.

“But it’s not the whole story.

“The struggle cut deeper than I ever imagined.

“Fighting for my card in 2014. The 8-footer for par to keep it in 2021. Four runner-up finishes, two playoff losses, and weeks spent trying to recover from each one. Every missed cut somehow felt like the worst one. Every bogey on the last left a pit in my stomach. Watching peers achieve the success I desperately chased chipped away at my ego and my belief.

“Hundreds of what-ifs.

“Thousands of hours of effort with seemingly nothing to show for it.

“And yet, I’m incredibly blessed. I play a game for a living. I’ve earned far more than I deserve. But none of that erases the internal battles, the weight of expectation, the fear of falling behind, the quiet pressure of survival. Golf can be beautiful — and brutally honest.

“When the outcomes I dreamed of didn’t arrive, I had to create a new scoreboard. I started asking harder questions:

PGA Tour schedule is changing for 2027. Here’s what you need to know

The PGA Tour, in the midst of its 2026 schedule, now has an idea of some of its 2027 slate — and the early part of the year will have a different look.

Several tournament sites have recently posted dates for next year, though the Tour has not yet released an official statement. Josh Carpenter of the Sports Business Journal reported Tuesday that players were sent a memo outlining schedule changes.

To break down the schedule, let’s use a question-and-answer format.

The PGA Tour season won’t start in Hawaii, right?

Right. The Tour announced last month that it would no longer play its two Hawaii events, the Sentry tournament and the Sony Open, both of which had started the year.

When will the season start?

Based on tournament announcements, the season will start Thursday, Jan. 21 at the American Express event in La Quinta, Calif. This year’s event was won by Scottie Scheffler.

Then what tournaments will be played?

After the American Express, an as-of-now unnamed tournament will be played the following week at Torrey Pines, according to a story written by Golfweek’s Adam Schupak. Farmers Insurance ended its sponsorship of the event after this year’s tournament.

Here is what follows, based on tournament announcements:

– Feb. 4-7: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

– Feb. 11-14: WM Phoenix Open

– Feb. 18-21: Genesis Invitational

– Feb. 25-28: Cognizant Classic

– March 4-7: Cadillac Championship

– March 11-14: Players Championship

– March 18-21: Arnold Palmer Invitational

– March 25-28: Texas Children’s Houston Open

– April 1-4: Valero Texas Open

– April 8-11: Masters

– April 15-18: RBC Heritage

– April 22-25: Zurich Classic

– April 29-May 2: CJ Cup Byron Nelson

– May 6-9: Valspar Championship

– May 13-16: Truist Championship and One Flight Myrtle Beach Classic

– May 20-23: PGA Championship

What’s changing?

In order, here are the changes from this year, besides the Hawaiian events:

– The Pebble Beach and WM Phoenix Open events will swap dates, presumably for the Pebble Beach tournament to avoid the Super Bowl. (On a mostly unrelated note, next year’s Super Bowl will be followed by a federal holiday.)

– The Cadillac Championship moves from May to early March, taking the date of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The Cadillac will now precede the Players. Why the move? It likely has to do with the fact that this year’s Cadillac went head-to-head with a nearby F1 race. Plus March in Miami tends to make for better golf weather.

– The Arnold Palmer moves to mid-March, taking the date of the Valspar Championship. The API will now follow the Players — and it will go up against the start of the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

– The CJ Cup Byron Nelson will be played three weeks earlier, taking the date of the Cadillac Championship.

– The Valspar Championship will move from March to May, taking the date of the Truist Championship.

– The Truist Championship and the PGA Championship will each be played one week later.

– This year, starting with the Masters and ending with the PGA, six tournaments were played, including two majors and three signature events. Next year, starting with the Masters and ending with the PGA, seven events will be played — and one less signature.

– The Puerto Rico Open, which this year was played opposite the Arnold Palmer, has yet to announce its date.

What about beyond the PGA?

At this point, little is official, but here is what we know:

– The Charles Schwab Challenge, which is being played this week, will likely follow the PGA. Interestingly, had the Tour followed this year’s schedule, the Tour would’ve played three straight weeks in Texas, as the PGA is in the Lone Star State, at PGA Frisco.

– The U.S. Open, which will also be played at Pebble Beach, is set for June 17-20. Given that and the Charles Schwab assumption, the Memorial will likely be played June 3-6, so it doesn’t precede the Open.

– The Open Championship will be played July 15-18 at St. Andrews.

– A number of events have also made recent announcements. The Canadian Open said it would play its 2027 event at TPC Toronto; Travelers Companies, John Deere and 3M extended sponsorships of their tournaments through 2030; the Genesis Scottish Open said it would play its tournament at the Renaissance Club through 2030; and ISCO and Grupo Puntacana will be the title sponsors of their events through 2027.

– The 2027 BMW Championship will be played at Liberty National in New Jersey.

What about 2028?

Potentially several changes.

Carpenter of the Sports Business Journal reported a week ago that Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, in early May, showed players a “two-tier” schedule. The first tier would feature 16 Tour events, three playoff events and four majors, while the second tier would have 20 tournaments.

When asked last week about the tier system, Brooks Koepka said it was news to him, though.

“I don’t know anything about that,” he said. “I don’t have the information on that. I don’t know anything, unless something came out in the last week or so. I haven’t really paid much attention to it. Yeah, I’m probably not educated enough to answer that one.”

When will there be more information?

Likely next month at the Travelers. At the Players Championship in March, Rolapp said he would hold a press conference at the tournament at TPC River Highlands.
