When looking for a new putter, many golfers tend to focus, like Fully Equipped co-host Johnny Wunder, on strike and alignment.

“I look at putters like if I can aim it and I can hit it out of the middle,” Wunder said on this week’s episode.

But is that enough?

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, Wunder posed that question to PGA Tour putting coach and GOLF contributor Stephen Sweeney. Sweeney responded that there’s a bit more to it for most accomplished golfers.

“I think once you get below, certainly in a single figure handicaps, you’re definitely leaving some meat on the bone there,” he said.

Sweeney explained that he often tells people who ask him about getting a new putter that the real keys are making putts inside of eight feet and speed control from 30 to 70 feet.

“If a PGA Tour pro makes 25-footers at a 12 percent clip rate, if a consumer only makes, or a regular golfer only makes 2 percent of their 25-footers, they’re only 10% worse than a tour pro,” Sweeney said. “I mean, there’s no other area of the game that you’d say, ‘Hey, I’m only 10 percent worse than a tour pro, right?’ But you could be legitimately — from 4 to 8 feet, — you could be 40-50 percent worse than a tour pro.”

His point is that pros make so few of their 25-footers; looking at how many 25-footers you can make with a new putter is irrelevant.

What really matters is making short putts and not three-putting long ones.

“And on distance putting, you could be 70-80 percent worse than a tour pro on your proximity,” he continued. “So that mid-range level of putting is not that important to the average golfer, but… 3 to 8 feet and then outside 30, you need something sure, you can aim, you can start online, you can hit out of the center, but there’s definitely a weight component there for the speed putting, that I think the average consumer with a 7-handicap, they don’t match that up fully to take full advantage of what they’re investing in.”

So the next time you’re looking for a new putter, don’t go trying to make 10-20 footers. Make sure you can make the shorter ones and your speed control is good on the long ones.

TaylorMade lets golfers build wildly custom MySpider ZT putters

There’s something oddly revealing about the way golfers build custom putters.

Some players want everything murdered out in matte black, as if their putter should look like it belongs in a stealth bomber. Others want bright paint fills, colorful shafts and alignment lines that resemble airport runway markings. Some golfers want absolutely no alignment aid at all because they think too many lines clutter their brain. Others look at a clean topline the way most people look at an unsolved math equation.

Clearly, TaylorMade understands this, which is why the company is opening up its Spider ZT platform to full-scale customization through the new MySpider ZT program. It gives golfers the chance to essentially design their own version of the company’s zero-torque putter.

And yes, if you really want a maroon-and-olive-green Spider ZT with a rainbow graphite shaft and your initials engraved into the sole, apparently nobody at TaylorMade is going to stop you.

The interesting part is that TaylorMade isn’t changing the performance DNA of the Spider ZT. The company is keeping the engineering exactly the same while handing golfers control over almost everything they can see.

That’s good, because Spider ZT wasn’t designed to simply be another Spider. It debuted last year and aims to provide golfers with more face stability and consistency. TaylorMade’s approach blends zero-torque concepts into a shape and visual profile that still feels familiar to golfers who have spent years looking down at Spider mallets.

Now golfers can personalize that platform almost endlessly.

The MySpider ZT Standard model ($549.99) is available in lie angles of 68, 70, 72 and 74 degrees, while the heavier Counterbalance version ($599.99) comes in 70, 72 and 74-degree options. Both retain the onset hosel design and toe-up balance profile found in the stock Spider ZT models.

From there, the sky’s the limit.

Golfers can select different front finishes, back finishes, sole plate colors, paint fill combinations, face insert colors, sightline configurations and shaft colors. The Standard model offers steel and graphite shafts in finishes ranging from traditional black and silver to maroon, olive green and rainbow.

TaylorMade is also offering multiple alignment configurations that range from no sightline at all to single lines, triple lines, T-style configurations and something called “Pilot’s Eye,” which sounds less like a putting aid and more like a rejected Tom Cruise movie title.

The Counterbalance version receives its own customization treatment too, including sole plate colors, face insert colors and engraving options.

Players can also add up to six engraved characters to the sole because apparently some golfers now want their putters personalized like luxury luggage.

Honestly, this all makes perfect sense because putters occupy a strange place in golf equipment. Drivers are often evaluated scientifically. Irons tend to be judged by performance and consistency. But putters live in a much more emotional space. Golfers develop attachments to shapes, colors, sounds and alignment features that can border on irrational superstition. And if you’ve ever watched someone make more putts immediately after switching from one putter to another, you already know how personal all of this becomes.

That’s why programs like MySpider ZT exist. For TaylorMade, it creates another layer of engagement around one of the company’s flagship platforms. For golfers, it creates the opportunity to build something that feels less like an off-the-rack purchase and more like their own creation.

The Hexperimental #7 features a compact mallet profile with a ball-sized rectangular cutout that shifts massto the perimeter for added stability and alignment, while the Hexperimental #9 is a high-toe, traditional wide-body blade design. Both models share a modified plumber’s neck with minimal onset, delivering the look and feel of a traditional heel-shafted putter, now with zero torque.

Since its introduction, Simply Balanced Technology has been limited to center-shafted designs. Unreleased L.A.B. Golf blade putters spotted at Bay Hill

ORLANDO, Florida — There’s something ironic about spotting yet-to-be-released L.A.B. Golf blade-style putters in the practice area ahead of the 2026 Arnold Palmer Invitational. The Oregon-based company built its reputation on shapes that help golfers get more consistent results on the greens but look, to some, like potato mashers on a stick. L.A.B. has never shied away from unconventional designs.

The Link 2.1 and Link 2.2 that were leaning against a L.A.B. Golf bag next to the practice green at Bay Hill Club & Lodge on Tuesday looked refined, traditional and, dare we say, conventional while still retaining the company’s signature lie-angle balance technology.

The Link 2.1 resembles a traditional heel-toe weighted blade. It has a dark finish, clean shoulders and a compact profile. Like the OZ.1i HS, it is heel-shafted and features a riser that extends up from the head and connects to the shaft. L.A.B. debuted the riser system last summer in the OZ.1 HS series. It allows the company to offer heel-shaft putters with different lie angles while maintaining lie-angle balance. The riser progresses from being short on flatter lie-angle putters to to higher for more-upright putters.

Eight circular stainless steel weights are positioned in the Link 2.1’s sole, but what’s stamped on one of the back bumpers is particularly noteworthy. The 303 SS marking indicates the head is milled from 303 stainless steel, a material long favored by premium putter makers for its feel and machinability. Currently, L.A.B. putters are made from milled aluminum, and only two models, the OZ.1i and DF3i, feature stainless steel face inserts to provide the crisp feel and sound many players prefer.

The Link 2.2 appears to take that same fundamental shape and stretch it. The back flange is noticeably wider, which likely shifts more mass rearward and toward the perimeter to increase forgiveness. It still looks like a blade, but one that leans closer to the stability spectrum L.A.B. players have come to expect.

While the use of 303 stainless steel will be welcomed by many golfers, the bigger story may be what these shapes represent.

L.A.B. has built its identity around lie-angle balance, and that philosophy is not going anywhere. The design helps keep the putter face square to the arc of a player’s stroke on the backswing, through impact and into the follow-through. Models such as the DF 2.1 and DF 3 pushed the boundaries of geometry in pursuit of torque resistance. More recently, the OZ.1 introduced a more traditional look. Now, the Link 2.1 and Link 2.2 appear to answer a different question: What if you could get lie-angle balance in a package that looks familiar at address?

For many golfers, particularly those who grew up on blade putters, visual comfort matters. The Anser-style profile has endured for decades because it frames the ball cleanly and sits square without distraction. If L.A.B. can integrate its zero-torque principles into a traditional 303 stainless steel blade, it could open the door to players who admire the technology but have hesitated because of the shapes.

The 303 stainless steel construction is also significant. Unlike the DF3i or OZ.1i, which incorporate face inserts to fine-tune feel and sound, a fully milled 303 head would not require an insert. The material itself typically produces a softer, more responsive impact sensation than aluminum or multi-material constructions. For purists who prefer a single-piece milled head, that detail matters.

These putters have not been officially announced, and specifications, pricing and release timing remain unknown. But visually, they suggest refinement rather than reinvention.

If the DF 3 and OZ.1 proved that lie-angle balance could succeed in bold, high-MOI platforms, the Link 2.1 and Link 2.2 hint that those same principles may now be migrating into more traditional forms.

If that happens, L.A.B. may find itself doing something it has rarely done before: winning over golfers who want cutting-edge performance without giving up the look of a classic blade.
