CARLSBAD, Calif. – A 40-year-old Austrian used Nippon Shaft products yesterday to record his ninth victory on the DP World Tour.

The champion used N.S.PRO MODUS³ TOUR 120 steel shafts in his irons and wedges to post a 19-under par total with rounds of 64-66-68-67—265 at the Volvo China Open in Shanghai. He trailed by three shots on the 10th hole of his final round. There, he chipped in for birdie, drained a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 11 and made another long putt on No. 13 to tie for the lead. In the end he won my three shots and earned €400,172 ($469,000).

Here’s how much every player made

Here, you can learn how much every player made at the 2026 RBC Heritage. The headline says that.

As to how they made it? There are various means, of course, and earlier this week, Justin Thomas offered some thoughts, after being asked: If you were an agent recruiting college players, what would you look for? How do you know someone is going to do well?

“I feel like the golf side, obviously you can see,” Thomas said. “I notice a lot, or probably what I pick up on more than anything is just talking to them and how they talk and how they go about things.

“I know I’ve been around some college players that are very comfortable, if you will, and it’s hard to explain, but versus somebody like Jackson [Koivun], I don’t think he — he doesn’t feel like he’s owed any of this or I should play like this or I deserve this. He seems like he just really wants to be the best player he can be, and he’s not cocky, he’s not arrogant, he doesn’t think he’s above anybody or any situation versus some other — I’ve been around maybe some that are.

“I would say for me, that would probably be the biggest thing is just kind of seeing how they handle themselves.”

Thomas was then asked what he thought sets him apart.

“You have to have some skill,” he said. “You have to have some — there’s a lot of people you see try and do something athletic or sport related where you’re just like, you’re just not going to get it. I have some of those people in my family. I’ve watched them try to play golf and I’m like, you’re never going to be good at golf, no matter how hard you try. That is a part of it.

“But it’s a good question. I’m not sure if I could — other than a specific thing in golf, I don’t know. I think my work ethic and my want to win golf tournaments and drive to be the best, I think, has a lot to do with where I am. But I’m not sure.”

1 simple key to hit more bombs: Be a ‘pressure’ player

The key to powerful shots is knowing where and, more importantly, when to create pressure in your swing.

I have an easy way to explain both by using a homemade training aid (a streamer wrapped around the hosel of my driver) to explain.

At the start, the takeaway, the clubhead moves back, away from the target, and by the end of the backswing, it has traveled back toward the target. The secret to applying pressure to create power is moving your pressure with the clubhead. So, as you take the club back, away from your target, your pressure (or, if you prefer, your weight) should do likewise.

In the photo above, you can see (with the help of the streamer) that the club is moving away from the target and that I’ve matched this move by shifting my pressure away from the target, into my trail leg.

As soon as your club reaches parallel to the ground in your backswing, however, the clubhead actually starts its journey toward the target, culminating at the top of your backswing. So it’s at this point — the first time the club gets parallel to the ground — when you need to begin shifting forward.

This might be earlier than you’ve ever imagined. Timing this pressure shift (from back to front) turns on the jets on your down-swing. Bombs away!

Gary Player gives advice to Tiger Woods

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods is in pain, Gary Player says, and he doesn’t blame him for taking medication.

But Player said he shouldn’t be driving a car.

“When you’re taking that medicine, it’s dangerous when you’re driving a car, same as it’s dangerous when you look at your cellphone in the car,” he said. “There’s 6,000 accidents a day in motor cars.

“So I think all he’s got to do is just not drive a car and get a chauffeur. My reflexes, I think, are as good as when I was 20, but I don’t drive anymore. I get a chauffeur. I think that’s the answer to it.”

Player’s comments came Thursday morning at Augusta National, after the nine-time major winner, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson hit ceremonial tee shots to start this year’s Masters. On March 27, Woods was involved in a two-car crash near his home on Jupiter Island, Florida, he was arrested and he was charged with misdemeanor DUI charges, in which he has pleaded not guilty. On March 31, Woods said he was “stepping away” to seek treatment.

The 15-time major winner had been trying to get ready to play in the Masters, which would have been his first tournament play since the 2024 Open Championship. On Thursday, Player was asked what advice he would give to Woods.

His answer lasted over 2 minutes.

“You know, it’s very easy, the human being is so critical of everything,” Player said. “If I or any of you in this room had the pain that Tiger Woods had — think of the excruciating pain that this man has been going through for a long time.

“I personally think, in my opinion — if I’m right or wrong, I’m sorry — but he was trying to be a Navy SEAL scout for a while. Funny enough, I had a friend who was a Navy SEAL scout. He said this long ago: He said Tiger will really suffer in the future with his back and with his legs. Look what’s happened? I think it’s 20 operations on either the back or the legs, but many, many operations on his leg and his back. So he’s in pain.

“Do I blame him for taking medicine? Hell, no. He has sleep deprivation. Do I blame him for taking something to help him sleep? No. But I don’t think he should drive a car.”

Player said his “heart goes out” to Woods.

“There’s nothing worse than living in pain every day of your life,” he said. “You can’t think of anything worse. I just hope he can get it all sorted out because he’s such an asset to golf and has done so much for the game.

“There was never — when we were young people, there were no Blacks playing the Tour, guys. I remember going to Charlie Sifford in 1957, and I said, Mr. Sifford, how did you play today? He said, I’m not allowed to play, I’m Black. So I experienced apartheid in South Africa and in America. Tiger comes along, and you realize what he does for the Black man around the world, you can never work out what he’s done for golf. So my heart goes out for him.”

Slow player called out by NBC broadcast, Fitzpatrick: ‘Very frustrating’

Matthew Fitzpatrick has never been a fan of slow play — nor the way the PGA Tour has handled the problem.

So it was only fitting that his latest Tour win came with an extra hurdle: His playing partner’s pace.

“That was really frustrating. It was slow today. I felt like there was a lot of stop-start,” Fitzpatrick said after his win at the Valspar Championship.

He chose his words carefully and never called out his playing partner Adrien Dumont de Chassart by name, but his words echoed sentiments he’s shared throughout his years on Tour. It’s a tricky tension to tackle — individuals playing for their livelihoods will always take the time they feel they need, while stroke penalties can feel hard to fairly dish out — Fitzpatrick has consistently called out the policing of issue, using phrases like “truly appalling,” “a disgrace,” “pathetic” and more.

Three years ago, following a big-time win at Harbour Town, Fitzpatrick took aim in a Sky Sports interview. But he also acknowledged he was taking a futile stand.

“The problem is, though, this conversation has gone on for years and years and years, and no one has ever done anything,” he said at the time. “So I feel it’s almost a waste of time talking about it every time. I have my opinions — they’re probably strong opinions, but PGA Tour, DP World Tour, no one’s going to do anything about it.”

Back to Sunday, then. While Fitzpatrick’s day was smooth — he fired three-under 68 en route to his first PGA Tour victory in nearly three years — Dumont de Chassart’s was less so. The 26-year-old Belgian’s opening tee shot flew out of bounds en route to triple-bogey 8 and he made a second 8 at the par-5 11th; his handling of the latter took such a long time that Fitzpatrick, who’d played out of turn in an attempt to keep their group on pace, took the unusual step of asking an official for help.

NBC’s on-course reporter John Wood said that Fitzpatrick was “perturbed” by Chassart’s pace, which he described as “glacial, to be kind.”

Rules official Orlando Pope confirmed on the broadcast that Fitzpatrick had spoken with an official and that the Tour had begun unofficially timing him; that eventually led to an official warning.

“Yeah, just, you know, just not ready,” Fitzpatrick said, referencing his playing partner, if not by name. He was drawing a distinction between making a high score — which happens and can inevitably slow up play — and playing slowly while doing so.

“When you’re not ready to play a golf shot it gets frustrating after awhile. Particularly when you playing well yourself or you’re in contention or whatever it is. It definitely knocks you out of your rhythm. Because you hit, you walk to it, you kind of think about it, you hit again, and you go.

“There in particular that hole, then you’re around a stretch there that can get a little bit quirky with different shots and stuff, so you have to be on it,” Fitzpatrick continued. “It definitely knocked me out of rhythm I felt like for the next two, three holes. I was kind of chasing my tail, because I’m trying to speed up and trying to keep us or get back in position, and at the same time you’re obviously trying to win a golf tournament.”

Fitzpatrick did ultimately win that golf tournament.

Chassart tumbled to T26 after a 74. Still, he avoided any slow-play penalty and improved from No. 97 to 91 in the season-long FedEx Cup standings.

It has been nearly nine years since the last time the Tour last issued a stroke penalty. The Tour announced several potential fixes early last season. Safe to say Fitzpatrick thinks those remain a work in progress.

But if given the chance, we doubt he’d change anything about Sunday’s winning round.
