Whoop data shows Rory McIlroy handled stress, slept great at Augusta

When the pressure was on Sunday at the 2026 Masters, Rory’s heart was racing. Whoop data reveals how he felt, and how he handled the strain on 18.

There are moments in golf when your swing doesn’t tell the real story, but your body gives it away.

Standing on the 18th tee at Augusta National Golf Club Sunday evening with a two-shot lead, Rory McIlroy looked like a player in control. He had just made an all-world up-and-down on both 16 and 17, and now he was one hole away from winning his second Masters. His swing, however, told only part of the story.

Think back to the last time you stood on a tee with a $5 Nassau on the line. Now magnify that by a million. Your grip pressure goes from “neutral” to “holding onto a live wire” in about two seconds, and your heart is somewhere between a snare drum and the alarm system at Chernobyl.

According to Whoop, the maker of the fitness and health wearable McIlroy wears on his right wrist, his heart rate jumped to 135 beats per minute as his tee shot sailed into the trees on the right side of the 18th fairway. That’s the moment when most golfers start doing mental math about doubles, triples, and how to explain what went wrong.

But then something different happened.

Instead of climbing higher, his heart rate dropped to 121 beats per minute as he assessed the situation and played his recovery shot. In other words, at one of the most stressful moments of the round, McIlroy got calmer.

His heart rate spiked again to 136 beats per minute as he played his bunker shot, but then dropped to 117 before his first putt. As the moment shifted from survival to realization, it fell to 105 on the tap-in that secured the green jacket.

McIlroy appeared to handle his nerves overnight as well as he handled them on the course. His Whoop data showed he slept more than nine hours the night before the final round and averaged about eight and a half hours over the weekend. While the rest of us would be lying awake replaying every possible disaster scenario, McIlroy slept like a guy with an early tee time and nothing else on his calendar.

That’s where the technology becomes interesting. Devices like Whoop don’t just track steps or calories. They offer a window into how your body responds to stress, how quickly you recover, and whether you’re actually ready to perform.

McIlroy’s numbers point to something simple, even if it’s difficult to replicate. He didn’t just manage his swing under pressure. He managed himself.

Drunk Masters crasher arrested at Augusta for ‘criminal trespassing’

Monday brought the first day of 2026 Masters week. Eager patrons entered the gates excited to experience Augusta National’s hallowed grounds, all while on their best behavior. That is except for one ticketless Masters fan, who was arrested after refusing to leave the property.

He hoped to find himself watching the pros at Amen Corner, but he ended up spending the day in jail.

Man arrested for refusing to leave Augusta at 2026 Masters

According to a report from the Augusta Press, Matthew Stroud, a 36-year-old from Easley, Ga., arrived at Augusta National’s North Gate on Masters Monday “intoxicated.”

Once there, Stroud allegedly walked up to Masters patrons waiting to get into Augusta and requested their tickets for Monday’s practice round. Richmond County Sheriff’s deputies first asked Stroud to leave the premises at 11 a.m. ET.

But the incident was not over. Richmond County Sheriff’s Captain Scott Gay told the Augusta Press that Stroud initially agreed to their commands and left. Sometime later, though, Stroud returned and “continued the behavior” of harassing patrons for their Masters tickets.

Officers again told Stroud to leave, but this time he refused. At that point, officers placed Stroud under arrest for criminal trespassing.

From there, he was taken to the local Charles B. Webster Detention Center. Stroud was released on a $285 bond later in the day.

Masters tickets are one of the hottest commodities in sports, and one of the hardest to come by. Most tickets are awarded via the Masters ticket lottery, and reselling tickets is strictly prohibited by Augusta National.

But in the past, multiple people have been arrested over Masters ticket schemes.

In 2019, a Texas family was convicted of conspiring to commit mail fraud in relation to an illegal Masters ticket venture.

The four relatives arrested in the incident bought mailing lists to obtain the names and addresses of people, which were used to create fake accounts for the online ticket lottery for the Masters, according to court documents. The fake accounts were entered into the lottery using email addresses belonging to the family.

“These profiteering con artists thought they had succeeded in hijacking the Augusta National’s generous ticket lottery system to satisfy their own greed,” said Bobby Christine, who then served as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, in a statement at the time.

4 early observations from the ground at Augusta National

AUGUSTA, Ga. — It is the first and most essential fact of golf’s first major: Nothing ever changes at the Masters.

Unless, of course, you’ve been lucky enough to step foot on the ground at Augusta National more than once. It’s around this time you realize that everything changes at the Masters, all the time, from the enormous, white-shuttered structures that rise and fall without a whisper, to the shapes and pigments and angles and contours of the golf course that has hosted the tournament annually for nine decades.

Yes, change is the way of the world — and especially so at Augusta National on Masters Monday, the same day the golf world arrives for the first time after 360 some-odd lonely days without it. And after a 4 a.m. wakeup, 6 a.m. flight, 2.5-hour drive and brief changing session in the parking lot, change is what I found on this Masters Monday, a surprisingly mild one from Augusta National.

1. A new sign

The signs are an impressively significant part of the Masters tradition — written in careful Masters typeface and carrying a highly specific tone. But on a stroll throughout the golf course on Monday afternoon, I spotted one I had not seen in my previous five journeys to Augusta, a sign that came with ample foreboding.

A Masters volunteer carried the sign on a placard near the first tee box, and I later found the message had made its way throughout the grounds on tournament Monday, when one group of men made a beeline for the concession stand in Amen Corner.

“I hope it’s not 5!!”

2. Construction craziness

It is not hard to earn an appreciation for the new Player Services Building — a new, multi-million dollar player performance center that sprouted from thin air sometime between last April and Monday morning. To the trained eye, the new building sticks out on the horizon like a sore thumb, looming over the far end of the practice range as an omnipresent reminder that Augusta National can — and very often does — summon gleaming new buildings from the earth with impressive nonchalance.

Of course, to the normal eye, the building is not a sore thumb — far from it. It fits into the Masters’ white-shutter-and-black-shingle aesthetic like a glove, and provides no shortage of pampering for golfers in the sport’s first major. In other words, it’s a worthy addition to a growing city of identical white buildings used to house the biggest week in golf. And hey, maybe the members can get a nice gym out of it during the offseason.

3. Candy Crush

The biggest addition to the Masters this year is not a player or a pin location — it’s a piece of candy. Masters-themed candy. And today I did the honors of trying the new Masters “Candy Bar” — a dark chocolate, caramel, rice crisp and hazelnut crunch offering from Atlanta-based Bitzel’s Chocolate.

Long story short, it’s delicious. I will likely eat at least five of them before the week is out. Though I do wish it was sea salt on top of the candy bar instead of hazelnut, both for our tree allergy kings and queens and for adding a little savory tang to balance out the candy bar’s sweetness.

4. A caddie cabaret

Late on Monday afternoon in Amen Corner, the glorious green of the 11-13th holes was replaced by a troupe in white robes — attire belonging to a half-dozen of Augusta National’s caddies. The group was led by Scottie Scheffler supercaddie Ted Scott, who spent a long while on each green recording the undulations in the green. (This, I suppose, is the sort of unheralded work that brings your partner four green jackets.)

It was funny to see the rest of the caddies (including loopers for Jason Day and Min Woo Lee) following Scott’s lead on the 12th green. Together, they walked in a carefully calculated tango around the putting surface as they each gathered intel for the week, scribbling distances and other obscure bits of information into their yardage books. Maybe this moment will mean nothing come Sunday afternoon, but nobody knows that on Monday afternoon — and they’d certainly not prefer to spend Sunday evening wishing they’d been here for a few minutes longer.

Next door to Augusta, golf is booming in Aiken, S.C.

Even under ordinary circumstances, a tee time at Augusta National is tough to come by.

But this week and next — when the famous club is staging a big women’s amateur, followed by an invitational with a green jacket and immorality at stake — for all but a modest host of golfers, securing a booking is impossible

Which doesn’t mean the rest of us are fully out of luck when it comes to memorable golf around these parts. Roughly 30 minutes northeast of Augusta, lies Aiken, S.C., a history-rich city where golf’s roots run particularly wide and deep.

The game in Aiken dates to 1892 and the birth of Palmetto Golf Club, the oldest 18-hole course in the Southeast. Twenty years later came Aiken Golf Club, established as an 11-hole layout before expanding to 18. Both properties have a colorful past and present.

But the story of golf in Aiken is as much about what’s new as what’s old. In recent years the area has seen a remarkable proliferation of marquee courses that have made Aiken one of the country’s most buzzed-about golf destinations.

Earlier this year, GOLF.com spent a week exploring the area. What we found is a golf scene animated as much by the people as the places. We sat down with Jim McNair, who runs Aiken Golf Club as his father did before him, and who designed a par-3 course that has become home to a local First Tee chapter. We toured Tree Farm with Kye Goalby — son of 1968 Masters champion Bob — who had a major hand in its design on behalf of Tour pro Zac Blair. We looped Old Barnwell with Nick Shreiber, founder of a uniquely structured private club built around an unusually ambitious social mission. We also got early looks at two courses still taking shape: the 21 Club, inspired by a lost Alister MacKenzie course in Argentina, and New Holland, which will operate on the UK model — a membership, but with tee times set aside for outside play.

For all its growth, Aiken retains much the same allure that made it a draw for the monied classes in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It’s a rare and appealing hybrid, quaint but cosmopolitan, with horse farms rolling out beyond a downtown that moves at its own unhurried pace. That pace, though, quickens during Masters week, when many of the best courses, new and old, open their tee sheets to outside play (availability varies, so if you’re looking to peg it, check ahead).

As the year’s first major approaches, there’s good reason to head to Augusta. But whenever you make a trip to the area, Aiken is worth a detour.

One year ago, the star American amateur came up one shot short of the ANWA title, despite shooting a final-round 68 at the home of the Masters. This year is a different story.

Talley cruised through 36 holes at Champions Retreat on Wednesday and Thursday, making zero bogeys and finishing with a one-shot lead.

Her 11-under total through two rounds matches her total score at last year’s ANWA. Now, the final round at Augusta National is the only thing that stands between her and history. Meja Örtengren and Maria Jose Marin are tied for second at 10 under.

After the full field played a practice round on Friday at Augusta National, the 32 players who made the cut will compete at Augusta National Golf Club over 18 holes to determine this year’s champion.
