Dads are somehow both an enigma and incredibly easy to shop for. Golf dads are even easier.

Sure, they annoy us because it’s hard to buy something for the guy who buys himself what he wants when he wants. However, we can turn that into our superpower. Beat him to the punch. Buy him the things that you know he hates buying. The real gift? You saved him a trip.

Here are five golf gifts I’m getting my dad for Father’s Day.

1. Golf Tees

This is arguably the most annoying thing for any golfer to purchase. We know it’s a use item and one that we’re likely going to lose. There are some golfers, like my dad, who really like a specific tee. The “there’s free tees at the golf course” argument gets thrown out the window once he discovers plastic tees with the American flag on them.

Something else to think about when buying tees is helping dad out on the course. Some of our fathers are getting older, and getting a tee into the ground can become a chore. Luckily, there are a number of tees on the market that aim to help with that. You may recognize the classic Martini tee, but my personal choice is the Maxx Pro PTS tees from Pride Sports. 2. Gloves

Another perfect trip saver. Another use item that a golf dad knows he’s going to have to buy more of, but it’s a little bit sad every time. The usual solution is to order a big pack of cheap gloves, but we all know how that goes. That just gives you the appearance of saving money. You end up going through those gloves faster and having to replace them anyway. My advice? Go with a glove that may be a bit more expensive, but will last. Better yet, get him two so he can rotate them in and out. He may even go the entire golf season without needing to make another purchase.

3. Golf Balls

This one can be tricky. We should all aspire to play the same golf ball every time we play, but golf ball prices have gotten a bit crazy. Do we buy the high-end golf ball that performs exceptionally well, or is the more value-oriented ball the right choice for our dad to play twice a month? There’s also a handy middle ground if you can’t make up your mind. That decision is up to you and your father, but here’s my best suggestions for all three.

In our middle tier, I’ve got to give the edge to the Wilson Triad. It’s a great ball that spins really well, creates consistent speed and has a nice durable cover so dad can get through a couple months with just a couple boxes.

If you’re worried about these U.S. Open greens, you shouldn’t be

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — If you were worried about whether Rory McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion, would find suitable partners for some Wednesday-afternoon tune-up golf, here on the eve of the sixth U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, you can stop worrying.

McIlroy went off the 10th tee a little after 2 p.m., playing with Mason Howell and Hamilton Coleman. Both are 18-year-old native Georgians who will matriculate at the University of Georgia at the end of summer, where they will be roommates. Both had tour bags every bit as big as Rory McIlroy’s bag.

The fellas chatted easily with McIlroy, 37 and bound for the World Golf Hall of Fame. Both are McIlroy’s match for swing speed and ball speed and get-on-with-it speed. If they were intimidated at all, there was no outward sign of it. McIlroy made a subtle nod when Coleman, who looks to weight about 138 pounds, smashed a driver off 10. Coleman nodded back like this — a practice round with one of the best golfers in history — is an every day. Kids these days. Kids!

Waiting to play a hole, McIlroy started doing the bouncing ball thing, turning the face of his wedge into a trampoline, bouncing his ball again and again of its scoring lines until one bounce got away from him. McIlroy watched as his ball went right into his golf bag, falling straight to its bottom with an immediate and audible thud. He offered a rueful laugh and he and his caddie, Harry Diamond, started to pull the clubs out of the bag, with a plan to retrieve the ball, before giving up. McIlroy put out his hand for a new ball.

All the while, Howell kept doing his own bouncing ball routine, stopping the ball in the face of his wedge whenever he felt like it. A kind of magic trick, really — fun-and-games, on the eve of the U.S. Open. Howell was wearing an embroidered belt with ANGC stenciled on it. That is, the Augusta National Golf Club. In April, Howell played in his first Masters, earning a spot in the field, and a spot in Rory McIlroy’s Thursday-Friday threesome, as the U.S. Amateur champion.

If Mason Howell and Hamilton Coleman are two of the prominent faces of elite American amateur golf for the next couple-three years, elite American amateur golf will be in a good place, for skill, for poise, for a do-it-right ethos. In case you were worried about it. Rory McIlroy didn’t agree to join these kids, half his age, out of happenstance.

If you were worried about the quality of the greens, here at Shinnecock Hills, based on Michael Kim’s comments or anything else, don’t be. The Korean-born golfer, with a notably active social-media life, described the greens as “spongy” and “quite bumpy” and pockmarked with “aerification holes” in a post on Tuesday. The greens were not spongy by Wednesday afternoon, and Rory & Friends went around. They were not bumpy. The teenagers were rolling one tumbling putt after another. The greens were dotted with dark healed aerification holes. They will do nothing to a well-struck end-over-end putt.

These beautiful and sloping William Flynn greens here are a variety of colors, as exposed greens on windblown courses near open water often are. You can see shades of poa and rye and bent on the greens, along with the aeration dots. These are not Oakmont greens or Augusta National greens. They’re Shinnecock greens and they are more than ready for the test.

If you were worried about the USGA and how it will handle the demands of putting on a U.S. Open on an exposed and hilly course with four days of wind in the weather forecast, don’t be. For starters, golf is an outdoor sport (with all due respect to TGL indoor play) and the challenges of weather are elemental parts of the game. More to the point, this current USGA regime — the president, Kevin Hammer, whose father was a club pro; the CEO, Mike Whan, who made his way in golf as an effective LPGA commissioner; John Bodenhamer, who runs the USGA’s championships and has obsessively watched previous Shinnecock Opens to learn what he could — is comfortable reducing green speeds and keeping the greens moist in the name of keeping balls on the green in the wind.

In other words, we’re going to get 72 holes of golf in, over these next four days, and it will be good, by which we mean it will be interesting. So don’t worry. As the kids say, or used to, it’s all good.

A simple gear change helped Nelly Korda win a U.S. Women’s Open

Nelly Korda put fresh wedges in play at Riviera, a reminder that worn grooves can quietly cost everyday golfers spin and control.

Nelly Korda’s winning setup at the U.S. Women’s Open was full of equipment most golfers would expect from the best player in the women’s game.

There was a TaylorMade Qi4D driver, a TP5x golf ball, a Stealth 2 7-wood, P·7CB cavity-back irons and a prototype blade putter. In other words, gear that can make everyday golfers drool and lean closer to the screen, even if that exact setup might not be ideal for the average player trying to take on Riviera Country Club, which ranks 17th on Golfweek’s Best Classic Courses.

That’s the effect “winner’s bags” can have. A great player wins a huge tournament, the equipment list gets posted, and golfers start looking for magic.

However, the most useful gear lesson from Korda’s U.S. Women’s Open victory at Riviera may not be that she plays a Qi4D driver, TaylorMade’s TP5x ball or a prototype blade putter. It might be that before one of the biggest tournaments of the year, she paid attention to something many recreational golfers ignore until it is too late: Nelly put fresh wedges in the bag.

According to TaylorMade, Korda added fresh MG5 wedges for Riviera, specifically a 50-degree SB and a 54-degree HB, to get fresh grooves for firm turf conditions at the U.S. Women’s Open. That may sound small compared with a driver switch or a new putter, but around Riviera, where firm greens, tight lies and recovery shots can expose inconsistencies, it matters.

Most amateurs understand that grips wear out, balls get scuffed and driver faces can crack.

Wedge grooves are different. They wear down gradually, almost invisibly, until one day the ball that used to check near the hole starts releasing like it has a dinner reservation somewhere behind the green.

Fresh grooves are not about making a wedge “better” in some mysterious, Tour-only way. They restore consistency. When grooves are sharp and clean, especially on partial shots, bunker shots and pitches from grass, they help the face manage moisture, debris and friction. That can create more predictable spin and launch.

As grooves wear, you won’t lose control immediately. Instead, you may notice that one shot checks and the next one hops and runs. Suddenly, what felt like a technique problem might be an equipment maintenance problem.

For Korda, the move was tied to Riviera’s firm turf. On softer courses, players can use trajectory and landing angle to help stop the ball. On firm courses, especially major championship setups, spin control becomes more valuable because the margin for error shrinks. Otherwise, a good shot can become a 25-footer.

Korda’s week was not won only with wedges. She drove the ball beautifully, hit controlled iron shots and leaned on the all-around game that has made her the dominant player in women’s golf.

But the wedge detail is important because it shows how elite players think about equipment. They are not just asking, “What is the newest club?” They are asking, “What does this course demand?”

You probably do not need Korda’s exact driver specs, her prototype putter or to organize your golf life around what a major champion uses, unless you also have a world-class swing, elite speed control and a short game that travels under U.S. Open pressure.

But you probably need to look at your wedges because most avid players use them for too long.

If you play a lot, practice from bunkers, hit range balls with your wedges or use the same 54-degree or 56-degree club for everything inside 100 yards, the grooves may be more worn than you think.

That does not mean you need to replace your wedges every few months like a Tour player. Tour pros hit more shots, practice more often and compete on firmer, faster surfaces where tiny differences are magnified. But recreational golfers often go too far in the other direction, keeping wedges in the bag for years while expecting them to perform like they did when they were new.

For you, the better question is whether your wedge shots still behave the way you expect. Do half-wedges launch higher and spin less than they used to? Do chips release more than they did a season ago? Do bunker shots feel like they are sliding up the face?

Maybe it is technique, but maybe your wedge grooves are dulling.

Scoring clubs are precision tools, and precision tools wear.

Golfers love to talk about gaining 10 yards with a driver. Distance is fun. Drivers are cool, but nobody walks into a golf shop and says, “I would like to spend money on spin consistency from 47 yards,” unless they are either very serious or their short game is in bad shape.

Before Riviera asked her to control trajectory, spin and distance under major championship pressure, Nelly Korda made sure two of her most important scoring clubs were fresh.

A fresh wedge won’t make you as good as Nelly Korda, but it might make your next pitch behave more like the shot you thought you hit.

Some players have what it takes, and others do not. But I will explain how to best position yourself to achieve this goal.

What Is a Scratch Golfer?

Simply put, a scratch golf player has a handicap index of 0. Therefore, they must shoot even par in 18-holes to play to their handicap. If the total par is 72, a scratch golfer is expected to return that score on an average day.

When a scratch golfer plays well, they will card several birdies and finish their round under par. Conversely, bad days lead to the scorecard reflecting over par.

How Realistic Is It to Reach This Level of Play?

Not everyone can reach the level of a scratch golfer. I want to remove the fairytales and focus on the facts. You need to possess an element of talent and dedicate yourself to playing and practicing consistently.

Casual players who hit the golf course a couple of times a year are unlikely to lower their number of strokes to the range of a scratch golfer. Conversely, those who train and play consistently are not guaranteed to become lower handicap golfers.

It is realistic if you thoroughly understand golf swing mechanics, course management and improve the weaknesses in your game. Plus, you must have a steel mind that shrugs off a bad shot and encourages resilience.

10 Tips to Help You Become a Scratch Golfer

1. Get Fitted for The Correct Equipment

The first step to becoming a scratch golfer is to get fitted with the correct equipment for your game. A high handicap golfer is typically oblivious to which golf clubs and ball best suits their golf swing. That is why I suggest visiting a professional fitter sooner rather than later.

They will set you up on a launch monitor and analyze each part of your swing through impact. Statistics provided to you by the launch monitor include clubhead speed, club path, backspin, sidespin, apex, direction, and distance. Plus, they assess your putting stroke to find the ideal design for your setup.

Fitters have you test various clubs during their search for your holy grail. In addition, they determine which golf ball is compatible with your swing.

Although their work involves analyzing stats, posture, swing, and ball position, they have two objectives. Find the equipment that maximizes your distance without compromising accuracy.

Without the correct tools, you cannot expect to reduce your total number of strokes from that of a bogey golfer to the level of scratch players. That is much like sending a soldier to the front line with a knife, expecting them to win the battle.

2. Take Lessons

Hopefully, you took a golf lesson or three from a PGA professional when you first took up the game. That would have taught you the basics, such as How to grip the golf club, alignment, ball position, and rotation.

However, a couple of lessons will not cut it. You need to consistently work with a coach to neutralize any issues as soon as they arise. Otherwise, you walk off the golf course, pondering how one lousy hole prompted a disastrous round.

Then, you hit the range and keep making the same mistake without comprehending your errors and how to fix them. The experienced eyes of a coach will detect your issue, help you correct it, and then work with you to get back on track.

Regular lessons basically prevent bad habits from seeping into your game and imploding your mission to be a scratch handicap.

3. Practice with a Purpose

One of my friends, Pete Arnott, coaches amateurs and professionals in Scotland. We recently spoke about practicing with a purpose and how that sets amateurs from the pros.

He used the example of Tiger Woods, who would pick out a spot on the driving range and hit different shots to reach that point. For example, he would hit a full, straight 7-iron to the target, followed by a draw and a fade. Then he would hit a 6, 5, 4, and 3-iron and attempt to land it on the desired spot.

The point is that Eldrick had a mission to land as many balls as possible in the same spot by playing different shots. This gave him multiple shot options from that distance to navigate varying weather conditions and golf course layouts.

By the end of his practice session, he had improved his ability to stick it close to the target from that distance. Therefore, practicing with a purpose helped boost his game.

Before you learn how to hit a draw or fade, I urge you to improve your accuracy and distance control with a straight flight. Start with your highest lofted wedge. Pick out a point in line with your average full wedge distance, and hit 20-shots to that target. After your 20th shot, take a break and analyze the results.

If you achieved a 70% success rate, move on to your next wedge and follow the same procedure. Work your way through your bag and dial in every club in your bag. That is one example of numerous methods to practice with purpose and actually see improvement in your game.

4. Play Often

While some golfers make our game look like it requires minimal fitness, that is fake news. You can practice all you want on the range, but if you do not take those teachings to the course, you will struggle to lower your handicap.

5. Master Your Short Game

A solid short game is vital to reach a scratch handicap. If you cannot execute chip shots and struggle to putt, a scratch handicap is an insurmountable challenge. Pencil in a short game session, at least once a week, to hone in on your performance around the green.

When you possess the ability to get up and down from around the green, it enables you to escape disastrous situations. Instead of a bogey, you walk away with a par and do not destroy your round.

Besides, saving your round increases your chances of carding birdies. Golfers who know how to stroke a flat stick stand a higher chance of carding birdies during their rounds. 1-under par holes are essential to becoming a scratch golfer.

6. Learn How To Scramble

Players unfamiliar with the term should read our guide called what is scrambling? But, if you know how to scramble, you should improve your skills. You will rarely achieve a 100% fairways in regulation record every round. As a result, you need to prepare to escape tricky situations.

When you are in the thick rough, the sand, or behind a tree, you need to learn how to escape with minimal wounds. Therefore, you need to play smart and put yourself into a position where you can attack the flag and one putt to get down for a par.

High handicappers would implode in this quagmire and try and hit the ball through a 1-foot gap in the tree. Despite missing the 21-yard fairway, they still think they can execute with precision.

7. Shape Your Shots

I said earlier that you should focus on hitting the ball straight before embarking on a shot-shaping mission, and I stand by that. However, as you lower your handicap and know your way around the course, the next step is, shaping your shots.

The ability to hit a draw or fade enables you to position yourself optimally on doglegs and work your ball around trees and obstacles. Plus, working your ball from left to right allows you to remove hazards and trouble from your line. Plus, you can induce these shapes to play with the wind rather than into it, resulting in a loss of distance.

8. Play with a Caddie

Certain golf courses do not offer caddie services, but if your local does, take advantage of their knowledge. I credit most of my results on the course to my caddies as a junior. Edwin guided me to make the right club and shot selections, taught me how to read greens, and play off different lies.

Having a caddie gives you one less element to worry about when on the golf course. You do not have the heavy load of your bag on your back, and you have a second opinion before making a shot decision.

Finally, it helps if you can build a long-term relationship with a caddie, as I did with Edwin. He understood my game, my thought process, and what shots I could and could not execute. Thanks to him, I made better decisions that saved me strokes when I could easily have carded a double or triple bogey.

9. Improve Your Course Management

Amateurs often step onto the tee box and start swinging. There is no thought about the hole’s layout and where they should place their ball. Course management requires you to think astutely and play for your position. Effectively, you ask where should my ball land on this shot to give me the best chance at attacking the flag on approach?

Manage each shot and think about position. It is, of course, easier to make birdies from the fairway than from the woods.

For example, if water runs along the left side of the hole, you should avoid this area like the plague and instead aim to the right. That completely eradicates the threat of the water hazard.

10. Learn Green Grass Grains

My final word of advice revolves around grass strains. Each type of turf performs differently and impacts the result of your putt. For example, Bermuda grass produces fewer breaks when putting with the grain of grass. Conversely, bentgrass grows upwards and enables balls to break in every direction.

Bermuda greens are slower, while bentgrass produces increased speed. In addition, there is a third strain of grass used on golf courses, called Poa. This grass creates inconsistencies on the green by offering a pure roll one moment and deviating bobbling ball the next.

The point is that each grass strain impacts your putting experience. If you do not know how to play these greens, you will battle to play to a scratch handicap. Especially when you play at away courses covered in grass that you are unfamiliar with.
